Annual project meeting of the BMBF project „Heranführung der Generation Z an die Denkweise in der Quantenphysik – HedwiQ“

On March 11, 2025, the annual project meeting of the BMBF project „Heranführung der Generation Z an die Denkweise in der Quantenphysik – HedwiQ“ (Introducing Generation Z to quantum physics thinking) took place. This time, the meeting place was not a seminar room at the university, but the CoolMint student laboratory at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum, because we had something to celebrate (LinkedIN post). The first experimental modules, which had been conceived, developed and realized since the start of the project in October 2023, have arrived at their final destination. In future, pupils will be introduced to the world of quantum mechanics with our experiments on quantum key distribution. Embedded in an exciting detective story with integrated puzzles on binary coding, cryptography and eavesdropping security, the modules teach the basic principles of quantum physics in a comprehensive way. Marc Ebert, a doctoral student from the department of Teaching Technology in Paderborn, presented the module together with the experimental set-up in practice and explained the didactic background. Prior to this, project coordinator Professor Klaus Jöns (Hybrid Quantum Photonic Devices HQPD working group) gave an overview of the project to date. This was followed by Kanivar Türk's (HQPD, Paderborn) presentation of the physical background of the quantum mechanical laws used for the module and the selection of suitable experimental equipment. In the last contribution, Marc Peters from the external partner Atrineo AG discussed the roll-out activities under the motto “HedwiQ wirkt” (HedwiQ works) and presented various future perspectives for the dissemination of the project. The final highlight of the meeting was the guided tour around the museum's newly opened quantum computer exhibition by curator David Woitkowski, during which the Paderborn participants may have recognized one or two exhibits from their laboratories.
