Physics course of Elsen Comprehensive School visits PhoQS

On 28 April 2026, we welcomed students interested in physics from the twelfth grade of Elsen Comprehensive School to the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems. During their visit, they gained exciting insights into photonic quantum systems and were able to experience them outside the classroom. The visit was organised by teacher Anna Trilling and Dr. Anna Bauer, who is responsible for promoting young talent at PhoQS.

Dr Benjamin Brecht (AG Silberhorn) gave the students an insight into research at PhoQS and explained to them how innovative photonic quantum technologies will impact their future lives. They were then given a guided tour of the clean room and optics laboratories to see how the researchers work: They learnt about different work areas, were shown equipment and experimental set-ups and were able to take a look behind the scenes of everyday laboratory life.

Afterwards, as a special highlight, they were able to try out for themselves how much skill and concentration are needed to couple laser light into a very thin glass fibre. Accompanied by Julian Reiche (AG Zentgraf), the pupils took on this challenge with great commitment and enthusiasm. In the end, the queen of the lab was crowned. Congratulations, Klara!
