100 years of the German National Academic Foundation - A visit to the Institute of Photonic Quantum Systems

On 28 October 2025, the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS) at Paderborn University opened its doors for the 100th anniversary of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. As host of the event, the institute, together with the Paderborn university group of the Studienstiftung, invited more than 70 guests, including 50 sixth form students and other representatives, to an exclusive day full of science, inspiration and discovery.

With a look behind the scenes of the institute's new research building, the PhoQS Lab, the young visitors were given an impressive insight into the world of quantum photonics. The event combined scientific depth with interactive enthusiasm and was moderated by the Paderborn scholarship holders.

A look behind the scenes of quantum research

The participants embarked on an exciting tour of the PhoQS Lab laboratories. They were able to see the research from up close: from complex optical setups and ultra-stable laser systems to sensitive measuring systems that record quantum phenomena and tours around the clean room. The students also learnt first-hand how the first German demonstrator of a photonic quantum computer (PaQS) works

Keynote speeches and interactive learning

In addition to the laboratory excursions, the students were able to experience the four disciplines involved in the PhoQS - Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - in practical experiments at the Market of Opportunities. Highly complex topics were presented in a tangible way and at the same time gave those interested valuable information about the relevant degree programmes.

The event ended with a relaxed get-together where the students were able to engage in dialogue with the researchers, scholarship holders and each other in a relaxed atmosphere. Some took the opportunity to ask questions about choosing a degree programme, a career in research or the role of the Studienstiftung - a sign that the event not only imparts knowledge, but also creates motivation and perspectives. Not only the students were enthusiastic, but also the researchers, helpers and organisers emphasised the complete success of the evening and were very pleased with the interest and enthusiasm of the students.
