Prof. Dr.-Ing Christoph Scheytt: Synchronized Microwave and Optical Signals With Ultra-low Phase Noise in Silicon Photonics
In photonic quantum circuits optical pulses at various wavelengths, pulse shapes, and rep rates are utilized to generate photons, perform wavelength conversion, and to detect signals. In addition, high-quality RF signals are needed to provide precise sampling or trigger clocks. All optical and RF signals in an experiment or circuit typically have to be synchronized and should exhibit lowest possible jitter. The talk will suggest that with only two generic building blocks, the optoelectronic phase-locked loop (OEPLL) and the microwave-photonic pulse generator (MPPG) a flexible system for optical pulse generation and RF signal synchronization can be built. Both, the OEPLL and the MPPG, can be integrated in silicon photonics technology and thus allow for scalable and miniaturized photonic signal processing. Recent results of a 2 – 20 GHz OEPLL with excellent low jitter of less than 3fs rms and an MPPG with programmable rep rate and up to 100 GHz optical pulse bandwidth in silicon photonics technology will be presented.
